Job Description

Currently recruiting a Registered Nurse (RN) - NICU in Bethesda, Maryland, to work in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center to provide care to Active Duty heroes, their family members, and retirees.

  • Establish priorities of patient care based on essential patient needs and available unit resourNces including time, personnel, equipment, and supplies.
  • Evaluate effectiveness of self, care given by all health team members, and contribution of systems, environment, and instrumentation in progressing patient toward outcomes. Participate in in-service education programs. Participate in WRNMMC's Performance Improvement and Patient Safety Programs.
  • Demonstrate competency in complex medication and intravenous (IV) administration to include blood products and Total Parental Nutrition (TPN), IV push and continuous IV medication infusion.
  • Administer and monitor oxygen therapy, ventilator support, and intensive pulmonary care techniques as needed, responding appropriately to rapid changes in patient status.
  • Administer specific medications at designated times and in designated manner. Receive report and count narcotics with nurse going off duty.
  • Perform other duties to include floating to other work units as needed once cross trained to safely practice nursing in that location.
  • Accurate, and concise, as outlined in EHR (Electronic Health Record) documentation guidelines.
  • Demonstrate sound knowledge base and actions in the care and decision making for designated patient populations.
  • Participate actively in staff development for unit, nursing directorate personnel, and visiting students and military members in an observation status.
  • Participate in the orientation, training, and documentation of competency of newly assigned unit personnel. Participate in cross-training initiatives.
  • Demonstrate self-directed learning and participation in continuing education to meet own professional growth.
  • Seek validation of performance, skill level, and decision making as necessary and assertively seeks guidance in areas of question.
  • Demonstrate awareness of unit and nursing staff goals in accordance with WRNMMC mission. Demonstrate effective and professional communication methods and skills using lines of authority (chain of command) appropriately.
  • Formulate and use effective working relationships with all health care team members, patients, and significant others.
  • Practice effective problem identification and resolution skills as a method of sound decision making.
  • Review and make appropriate notation on the chart of a patient per unit specific requirements.
  • Once provided with "hands-on"experience, proficiently use the computerized systems and software applications commonly used in the assigned area, such as, but not limited to, ESSENTRIS, CHCS, and PYXIS.
  • Provide care to normal and high-risk newborn patients (the MTF has approximately 80% high risk population, e.G. PIH, diabetes, pre-term labor, multiple gestations). Recognizes changes in newborn or infant condition that would constitute an emergency situation and responds appropriately.
  • Operate and monitor the performance of essential equipment used in the care of stable newborns, e.G. Bili lights, radiant warmers, incubators, blood glucose monitor and other POCT procedures, pulse oximeter, medications via syringe pumps, etc. Interpret and respond to changes in infant conditions related to the equipment and report to the charge nurse as needed.
  • Possess knowledge of normal and abnormal newborn physical and neurological development and application of same in delivery of nursing care through discharge.
  • Gavage feed infants as ordered. Monitor for, and immediately report, signs of feeding intolerance.
  • Recover both stable, transitioning infants and patients of all gestational ages from general and regional anesthesia.
  • Identify potential post-anesthetic patient problems;specifically, airway management, hemodynamic instability and pain control, and intervene appropriately.
  • Provide Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP) interventions as indicated.
  • Provide intensive care to critically ill neonates with medical and surgical problems. Continually assess conditions of patient(s) for potential or life threatening crisis.
  • Operate cardio-respiratory monitors and interpret cardiac rhythms and respiratory patterns, determine implications and takes indicated interventions. Document all in a timely fashion and notify physicians accordingly. Operate hemodynamic equipment safely and effectively. Interpret generated data and respond appropriately.
  • Attend high risk deliveries and provide resuscitative measures to newborns as indicated by A.A.P. Standards.
  • Perform other duties as assigned to include floating to other work units as needed if qualified to safely practice nursing in that location and within the scope of an RN.
  • Participate in multi-disciplinary patient care rounds and provides anticipatory guidance and patient education to patients and their support individual(s).
  • Possess a functional knowledge of all available resources.
  • Obtain and maintain certification in American Heart Association Basic Life Support (BLS) for Healthcare Providers;American Heart Association Healthcare Provider Course;American Red Cross CPR (Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation) for the Professional Rescuer;or equivalent.
  • Successfully complete MTF neonatal medication administration exam/competency. The government will deem that the health care worker can successfully demonstrate safe skills in administration of medications according to local policies and procedures.
  • Effectively manage the environment of care to minimize the risk and promote safety to patients and family members.
  • Successfully complete the unit specific orientation competency skills checklist within 60 days of the first shift.
  • Maintain required records and documentation.
  • Utilize knowledge of (critical care) ethical and legal issues to provide maximal patient/family support during periods of physio psychosocial stress. Provide appropriate crisis intervention.
  • Promote patient and staff safety through adherence to accepted safety and infection control standards. Maintain a clean, safe, orderly and therapeutic working environment.
  • Perform other duties as assigned to include floating to other work units as needed if qualified to safely practice nursing in that location and within the scope of an RN.
  • Degree/Education: A graduate of an Associate, Bachelor or Master s program of Registered Nursing. The institution will be from a National League of Nursing (NLN) approved program.

  • Valid, unrestricted, RN license at least 1 state, territory or commonwealth of the US.
  • Experience: Possess at least two years of concurrent full-time Level III Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) experience within the last three years.
