Job Description


Currently recruiting a Registered Nurse (RN) - Emergency Room in Fort Belvoir, Virginia to provide care to Active Duty heroes, their families, and retirees at Fort Belvoir Community Hospital. The hours of operation are Monday through Saturday, between the hours of 6: 30 am to 8: 30 pm shifts may vary 8, 10 or 12 hour to include day and evenings, including Federal Holidays (services performed on Federal Holiday shall result in alternate day off within the same pay period). The exact hours of duty will be scheduled by the OIC, NCOIC.

DUTIES OF THE REGISTERED NURSE (RN) - EMERGENCY ROOM:


  • The ability to react to any emergency situation, e.G., cardiac or respiratory arrest, hemorrhage, shock, severe physical trauma and psychiatric reaction. Serve as member of resuscitation team.
  • Assess patients' conditions for potential or life threatening crises. Distinguish between normal and abnormal physical findings (from physical assessment and vital sign assessment). Plan appropriate nursing care set forth by the MTF, and IAW JC guidelines.
  • Operate defibrillator, EKG machine, and cardiac monitor.
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively communicate plans/actions and collaborate with a diverse healthcare team for the benefit of the patient, family and organization. Effectively educate patients and families regarding involvement in the plan of care, promotion of self- care, management of symptoms, and follow-up care.
  • Demonstrate excellent written communication skills to perform accurate documentation, both written and electronic, of all activity in accordance with requirements.
  • Demonstrated ability to recognize adverse signs and symptoms and reacts quickly and appropriately in emergency situations. Demonstrated ability to obtain, assess, and report critical lab or diagnostic results to patient s physician in a timely manner.
  • Demonstrate ability to act on all medical and therapeutic orders in a timely manner.
  • Demonstrate and adhere to peri-operative, infection control, safety policies and procedures.
  • Demonstrate good time management skills.
  • Coordinate patient care through a continuum and facilitate the achievement of optimal outcomes in relation to care, quality and cost effectiveness.
  • Maintain excellent patient assessment skills. Use the nursing process as a basis for professional practice. The contracted RN will demonstrate proper preparation of patient s for treatments and procedures, to include surgical interventions. Provide proper care and evaluation of postprocedural patients.
  • Knowledge of a variety of pharmacological agents used in patient treatment, the desired effects, side effects, and complications of their use as well as the accurate administration of the pharmacologic agent, including dosage calculations as required. Will be knowledgeable in administrative requirements for the documentation of patient' s condition, progress and acknowledgement of teaching, and follow-up care.
  • All RNs must pass annual competency review within the department.
  • Ensure compliance with standard of care and practice in accordance with all established policies, procedures, and guidelines used in the medical treatment MTF and IAW JC guidelines. Provides care within ethical and legal boundaries.
  • Complete orientation and competency verification programs in accordance with unit guidelines.
  • When assigned, will serve and participate in committees, functions and other meetings. Provide relevant and timely information, and assists with decision-making and process improvement.
  • As required, participate in customer service initiatives and medical readiness activities, designed to enhance health services.
  • When required, participate in the orientation, training, and evaluation of duty performance of newly assigned personnel, as appropriate.
  • Will report to the Nurse Manager. Will take direction from charge nurse and house supervisor as required in maintaining a safe environment.
  • Contract nurses can function in a charge nurse role after orientation/ competency assessment.

QUALIFICATIONS OF THE REGISTERED NURSE (RN) - EMERGENCY ROOM:
  • Nurse s will have successfully completed the undergraduate or graduate degree appropriate to the subspecialty from a college or university accredited by National League for Nursing Accrediting Commission (NLNAC), or The Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE).
  • Certifications: Current Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS), Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS). Certificate for Emergency Nursing (CEN) is preferred/ideal but not required.
  • Experience: Minimum of 1 year experience within the preceding 2 years in an emergency department setting that involved seeing both pediatric and adult patients.
  • Current, unrestricted license from any of the 50 states and U.S. Territories
  • Must be a U.S. Citizen (for access to Government computer systems)
